Brits Abroad: What do they Miss From Home?

Did you know that almost 5million Brits don’t live in Britain? Our native globetrotters are representing Britain all over the world. From business relocations to gap-years that never ended, ParcelHero wants to know what Brits miss most about home? So, if you are one of the 1.4m British ex-pats living in Australia, or one of the 750,000 Brits living in the States, or one of the 600,000 living in Canada, ParcelHero wants to hear from you. Here are a few of our favourite stories so far.

What do you miss most about the UK?
I miss great children’s clothes and shoes, British news & newspapers, especially Jon Snow and the Guardian and I definitely miss Irn Bru and Pickled Onion Monster Munch when I have a hangover.

What did you last send or receive?
The last parcel I sent was books and stickers to the son of a fellow blogger, and most recent arrival from home was a campaign T-shirt and poster from the Scottish Green Party

The Philippines Expat blog

Describe your blog in a nutshell
An entertaining travel and lifestyle guide about living in the Philippines

Where are you now? Cebu, Philippines

What do you miss most about the UK?
I really miss football. Here the national sport is basketball so hardly anyone plays or watches football. The live games are shown late at night or very early in the morning, and I need my sleep. Sounds odd but I miss cold weather. While it is nice living in a hot country in some respects, the humidity makes it uncomfortable to be outside for long periods of time and I’ve been sunburnt quite a few times. Finally there is a reason you don’t see many Filipino restaurants in the UK – the food is nothing to write home about. I love coming back to the UK from time to time and having a nice home-cooked roast dinner or fish and chips

What did you last send or receive?
I don’t think I’ve ever sent a parcel back to the UK. Usually I order things for them from UK sites, so that there aren’t any issues with delivery. My mum sent me a birthday card last year, but the postal service here in Cebu is essentially non-existent, so it took about 8 weeks to arrive

The last parcel I sent was an old Kindle to my grandmother and I have just received a lovely care package from a friend

Describe your blog in a nutshell
An insight into daily life in the UAE with reviews, things to do, thoughts on life, travels within the UAE and more

Where are you now? Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

What do you miss most about the UK?
I miss family and friends. I’m only seven hours away but it does take a bit of getting used to not having them round the corner. I’d love to have a postie who delivers to my front door – I have to collect it here, and proper deli-sandwich shops for British cakes, hot home-made foods and baked potatoes. There is nothing like that here

What did you last send or receive?
I haven’t sent a parcel since I have been here but yesterday I received a wipe clean tablecloth from a UK website. Not the most exciting thing but I was glad it made it!

Describe your blog in a nutshell
I left England in 2003 in pursuit of outdoor adventures, and a fuller way of living life

Where are you now? Sydney, Australia

What do you miss most about the UK?
I miss the atmosphere, ambiance and beer in traditional British pubs, a good old Sunday roast with all the trimmings and the British sense of humour

What did you last send or receive?
I sent one of my siblings a birthday prezzie and I have just got a great pair of trainers from Wiggle

Describe your blog in a nutshell

My transition from Britain to The Netherlands didn’t exactly go to plan. In fact, it wasn’t even part of the plan. That’s what happens when you are a self-declared accident prone Englishman. Language misunderstandings, cultural confusion, bizarre adventures and a few cases of mistaken identity

Where are you now? Rotterdam

What do you miss most about the UK?
I miss old fashioned chips… with vinegar! The Dutch like to put mayo on everything. I love liquorice but here, they like it incredibly salty and sour and they also delight in seeing the reaction of unsuspecting foreigners. And I miss hills, Holland is completely flat. Good for cycling but its nice to have the odd hill

What did you last send or receive?
I have a new online business and recently sent a novelty T-shirt to the UK and a while ago, with a new baby pending my Mother sent me a book on how to look after a baby as if it is a military procedure

themovetoamerica.wordpress.com

Describe your blog in a nutshell
An expat lifestyle blog sharing all the new experiences and cultural differences that a Brit living in this corner of the States encounters

Where are you now? Ohio, USA

What do you miss most about the UK?
I miss British bread. You can get bread here but it is awful – it is sweet and packed full of corn syrup! I miss the Brits in general, not just my friends and family and I love the British quirkiness. And Fish and Chips – I bet everyone says that! In particular proper chips – they just have a distinct taste that takes me back to my childhood.

What did you last send or receive?
The last parcel I sent was a necklace for my best friend and the same friend sent me a set of Cornish keyrings

Describe your blog in a nutshell
Its an attempt to share the joy of English in my current home in India

Where are you now? Bangalore

What do you miss most about the UK?
I miss being able to brush my teeth from the tap using running water, rather than water in a mug, makes your teeth feel much cleaner. Weird but true. I also miss talking at a normal speed without having to ‘go-slow’ so people understand me and I occasionally long for when day to day to day life runs smoothly without having to offer a big tip to get things done.

What did you last send or receive?
Sadly I never send parcels. I go home quite regularly so I tend to take things myself so I can see my friends faces when they open their gifts
